The Greenbrier East High School Spartans kicked off their 2024 football season with a dramatic 24-20 victory over the Riverside Warriors at Spartan Stadium. The game was a nail-biter from start to finish, with both teams trading blows in a closely contested match that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
The game started with both defenses setting the tone early, but it was Greenbrier East who struck first, capitalizing on a Riverside miscue that led to a safety. The Spartans held a 2-0 lead before Riverside responded with a touchdown run by freshman standout Malachi Hope, putting them ahead 7-2.
Greenbrier East answered back with a spectacular 52-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Brody Hamric to senior transfer Brady May, who was later named the McDonald's of Fairlea Player of the Game. This score helped the Spartans regain the lead, but the game remained tight as both teams exchanged points throughout the evening.
Riverside's offense continued to challenge the Spartans, but Greenbrier East's defense, led by sophomore Keshawn Bland and a relentless front line, managed to contain the Warriors when it mattered most. The Spartans added to their lead with another score, but Riverside was not to be outdone, keeping the game within reach until the final whistle.
The fourth quarter was particularly intense, with Riverside making a late push to close the gap. However, the Spartans' defense held strong, and a critical play by Brady May sealed the victory for Greenbrier East. May's performance, which included key receptions and strong defensive efforts, earned him the well-deserved Player of the Game honors.
With this 24-20 victory, the Spartans start their season on a high note, showcasing their ability to perform under pressure. Head coach Ray Lee praised his team for their resilience and determination, noting that while there are areas for improvement, this win sets a positive tone for the rest of the season.
Next Friday, Greenbrier East will host Beckley at Spartan Stadium, looking to build on their success and continue their winning streak. Fans can expect another exciting matchup as the Spartans aim to defend their home turf.
Final Score: Greenbrier East 24, Riverside 20
Player of the Game: Brady May

Brooks Koepka, the captain of Smash GC, secured his fifth individual title in the LIV Golf series by overcoming Jon Rahm in a tense playoff at the LIV Golf Greenbrier tournament. The victory on Sunday, held at The Old White course, not only marked Koepka's third playoff win but also held special significance as it was against a familiar and formidable rival.
The final round saw Koepka and Rahm, captain of Legion XIII, locked in a back-and-forth battle reminiscent of their face-off at the 2023 Masters. However, this time, it was Koepka who emerged victorious. After both players finished the regular round tied, Koepka clinched the win on the first playoff hole with a par, while Rahm, hindered by a difficult lie in the back bunker, failed to save par.
"This one just meant a little bit more," Koepka reflected after his win. "Playing Jon these last few years, especially after he bested me at Augusta, made this victory sweeter. He played phenomenally, especially down the stretch."
In addition to Koepka's individual triumph, his Smash team claimed the team title with a record-tying 53-under total score, finishing three shots ahead of Ripper GC. Koepka and teammate Jason Kokrak both shot impressive 7-under 63s in the final round, with reserve player John Catlin, stepping in for Graeme McDowell, contributing a solid 67.
Rahm, who recently won in England, was seeking back-to-back LIV Golf victories and entered the final round with a two-shot lead. However, Koepka quickly erased that advantage, leading to a nail-biting duel. Despite Rahm's late surge, which included birdies on the 16th and 17th holes to force the playoff, he couldn't overcome Koepka on the 18th.
"Playing against Brooks is always a challenge," Rahm said post-round. "It's fun for the spectators and us, though it stings a bit more when you lose. But it's these moments that push us to be better."
While Rahm may have fallen short, he did overtake Torque GC Captain Joaquin Niemann in the season-long points standings, setting the stage for an exciting showdown at LIV Golf Chicago, where the 2024 Individual Championship will be decided.
As the season nears its conclusion, Koepka remains focused on ending on a high note, especially after what he described as a "disappointing major season." With his team now a contender for the Team Championship in Dallas, the captain is eager for more champagne celebrations.
"This year hasn't been what I hoped for, but we're in a good spot to finish strong," Koepka said. "We've got two events left, so let's see what we can do."
      Team Competition Results
The final round of the team competition saw Smash GC secure the title with a cumulative score of 53 under par. Ripper GC finished second with 50 under, while Legion XIII took third at 42 under.
      Notable Performances
Louis Oosthuizen of Stinger GC delivered an exceptional performance, shooting a 10-under 60, the third-lowest round in LIV Golf history. His round included 11 birdies and one bogey, placing him tied for 8th. Jason Kokrak of Smash GC moved into the top 24 Lock Zone with a final round 63, securing his spot in the 2024 LIV Golf League. As the LIV Golf series heads to Chicago, all eyes will be on the battle between Rahm and Niemann, as well as the continued dominance of Brooks Koepka and Smash GC. The stage is set for an exhilarating conclusion to the season.

Jon Rahm has positioned himself perfectly as he chases his second LIV Golf title of the season. The Legion XIII captain, after a spectacular second-round 8-under 62, leads the LIV Golf Greenbrier tournament by two shots, heading into the final round.
Rahm's exceptional performance has put him at 14 under, giving him a crucial edge over the competition. The tournament's final round promises to be an exhilarating shootout, with favorable scoring conditions set on The Old White course.
In the team competition, Ripper GC, featuring an all-Australian lineup, has taken the lead with a score of 36 under par. The team surged ahead with impressive individual scores of 63 from Cameron Smith and Lucas Herbert and a 64 from Marc Leishman. They now lead Smash GC by a single shot and Legion XIII by six strokes as they seek their third team victory of the season.
Rahm’s Legion XIII has been dominant in the team category this season, securing four titles already. However, Rahm has only recently captured his first individual win at the previous LIV Golf event in the UK. A victory at Greenbrier would not only mark a consecutive individual title but also set the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the Individual Championship at LIV Golf Chicago next month.
“It would be pretty special,” Rahm said after his second round. “Joaquin [Niemann] has been playing fantastic golf all year, and to give him a run for his money is good. Hopefully, I can get the job done tomorrow and we have a nice tight race going into Chicago.”
Despite Rahm's dominance, Niemann remains in the mix, though he is currently tied for 20th at 6 under and faces a daunting task to clinch the title without a dramatic turnaround. Rahm’s focus for Sunday will be to fend off all challengers on a course known for its low scores. Last year, Bryson DeChambeau won with a final-round 58, and there have already been eight rounds of 63 or lower this week, with Rahm’s 62 being the lowest so far.
“I’m going to need a low one,” Rahm acknowledged. “No lead is safe.”
In the final group with Rahm will be Smash GC’s captain Brooks Koepka, a four-time LIV Golf winner, and Talor Gooch, the 2023 Individual Champion. Both are tied at 12 under. Also at 12 under are Richard Bland of Cleeks GC and Lucas Herbert of Ripper GC, while Cameron Smith, Marc Leishman, Smash GC’s Jason Kokrak, and Torque’s Sebastián Muñoz are all at 11 under.
Richard Bland, of Cleeks GC, who has enjoyed a stellar season with wins in the Senior PGA Championship and U.S. Senior Open, believes an individual title at LIV Golf would be career-defining. “It would be above everything, personally, just because of the standard of the players you’re up against,” Bland said.
Additionally, the tournament witnessed its first albatross in LIV Golf history when HyFlyers GC’s Brendan Steele holed his second shot with a 4-wood from 285 yards at the par-5 17th hole. Steele’s remarkable shot is the longest recorded in LIV Golf history and was met with a rousing reaction from the crowd. Despite his albatross, Steele finished the round tied for 20th at 6 under.
As the final round approaches, the stage is set for a dramatic conclusion at LIV Golf Greenbrier. With the leaderboard packed and the course ripe for low scoring, expect a thrilling finish as Rahm, Ripper GC, and the rest of the field vie for glory.

The first round of the LIV Golf Greenbrier tournament witnessed a thrilling start as Talor Gooch, Jason Kokrak, and Sebastián Muñoz each fired a bogey-free 7-under 63, sharing the lead heading into the weekend. Gooch and Kokrak's stellar performances also propelled Smash GC to a commanding four-shot lead on the team leaderboard, with a 20-under total. This total matches the lowest counting score by any team this season in the first two rounds.
      Smash GC’s Strong Start
Smash GC’s captain Brooks Koepka also had a strong outing, posting a 6-under 64, placing him in a five-way tie for fourth. Koepka’s round, combined with Gooch and Kokrak’s scores, has given Smash a considerable advantage over Ripper GC and Legion XIII, both tied for second at 16-under.
Gooch, who is seeking to revive his season after a challenging year, hit all 18 greens in regulation and capped his round with an eagle on the par-4 fifth hole. Despite being mathematically out of the running to defend his Individual title, Gooch remains determined to finish the season strong.
“It’s always good to have a day where golf is easy,” Gooch commented. “Golf hasn't been as easy this year as it was last year, so hopefully we can have a couple more easy days coming up.”
      Weather and Course Conditions
The day’s play was briefly halted due to an 80-minute weather delay, but the interruption did little to slow down the field. The Old White course at Greenbrier proved to be a favorable setup for several players, with 11 competitors finishing their rounds without a single bogey.
      Muñoz and the Lock Zone
Sebastián Muñoz, representing Torque GC, also capitalized on the ideal conditions. After an initial bogey on the seventh hole, Muñoz recovered quickly, birdieing five of the next six holes to secure his share of the lead. His strong performance is critical as he aims to finish the season inside the top 24, ensuring his place in the 2025 LIV Golf League season.
“A big week here, a big result would put me in, and just kind of own my own destiny, which is always nice,” Muñoz said.
      Round 2 Adjustments
Looking ahead to Saturday’s second round, tee times have been moved up two hours due to the forecast for more inclement weather. The shotgun start will now begin at 11:15 a.m. EDT, with live coverage available on LIVGolf+ and The CW starting at 1 p.m. EDT.
      Team and Player Stats
Several players stood out statistically after the first round. Lucas Herbert achieved 100% driving accuracy, while Dean Burmester led the field in driving distance, averaging 340.7 yards. Gooch, along with Marc Leishman and Joaquin Niemann, hit 100% of greens in regulation.
With two rounds remaining, the competition is wide open, with both individual and team titles still very much up for grabs.

The HyFlyers GC, one of the premier teams in the LIV Golf league, held a press conference today at the iconic Greenbrier Resort, marking a significant milestone in the league's history. The press conference featured HyFlyers’ captain Phil Mickelson, alongside teammates Brendan Steele, Cameron Tringale, and Andy Ogletree, as they reflected on LIV Golf's remarkable journey and shared insights into their experiences and the future of the league.
Reflecting on 100 Rounds of LIV Golf
As LIV Golf approaches its 100th round of competition, the HyFlyers took a moment to reflect on the journey that began in London in 2022. For Mickelson and his team, the journey has been nothing short of revolutionary for the sport of golf.
"It's exciting to see how far things have come and the direction we're headed," said Steele. "Being part of day one was an incredible feeling, and I'm even more excited about the next hundred rounds."
Tringale, who watched the inaugural event from Miami Airport, emphasized the rapid growth of the league. "It was revolutionary to our game, and to have joined it not long after and see how much steam it has picked up is exciting."
Ogletree, who played in the first event in London, described it as a "culture shock," with LIV Golf bringing a new energy to the sport. "The momentum we've gained over the last few years has been amazing, and the field has only gotten stronger."
      Memories and Mentorship
When asked about his favorite memory over the past 100 rounds, Mickelson reflected on the collective experiences rather than a single moment. "The experience of sharing things with the guys, lifting each other up, and working to improve together is what I cherish most. It’s a unique and special experience from my professional career."
Ogletree spoke about the invaluable mentorship he’s received from Mickelson. "Having the opportunity to play on Phil's team was something I couldn't pass up. The knowledge and experience he's shared with us have been incredibly beneficial, and it's what makes our team special."
Giving Back Through Bunkers in Baghdad
The HyFlyers also highlighted their partnership with Bunkers in Baghdad, a charity that provides golf equipment to troops serving overseas. Mickelson, whose father served in the military, spoke passionately about the importance of supporting those who have served the country.
"Greenbrier has a great history of supporting military projects, and what’s special about Bunkers in Baghdad is that 99% of all revenues go directly to sending equipment to soldiers," Mickelson said. "That type of support is why we’re so proud of our partnership."
      Looking Ahead: LIV Golf’s Future
The team also discussed their plans for the future, including new ventures into social media and fan engagement. Mickelson mentioned the team's upcoming "High Flyers: Pros vs. Schmoes" series, where fans will have the opportunity to compete against the HyFlyers.
"This is about connecting with the fans in a way we haven’t done before, letting them engage with the game in a new and exciting way," Mickelson said. "It’s all about creating an environment where fans and players can interact and enjoy the game together."
A Special Bond with the Greenbrier
The HyFlyers wrapped up the press conference by sharing their love for the Greenbrier Resort, which has hosted numerous prestigious golf events over the years.
"It's my daughter's favorite place to come, and there are just a million activities for her here," Steele shared. "For me, it's America's Resort, and the history here is incredible. It's a special place in the game of golf."
Tringale added, "What sets this place apart is the hospitality and the sense of going back in time to a more gracious era."
As LIV Golf continues to grow and evolve, the HyFlyers GC remain committed to pushing the boundaries of the sport while fostering a close-knit team environment. With the milestone of 100 rounds on the horizon, the future looks bright for the league and its players.
      Conclusion
The press conference at the Greenbrier Resort was a testament to the HyFlyers' dedication to their craft, their teammates, and the fans. As they continue to innovate and grow within the LIV Golf framework, the HyFlyers GC are poised to make even greater strides in the world of golf.

White Sulphur Springs, WV – As the LIV Golf League approaches a significant milestone, the Greenbrier played host to a press conference featuring star players Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, and Bryson DeChambeau. The event, held at the historic resort, centered around the 100th round of competition in the LIV Golf League, reflecting on the journey that began in London in 2022.
The press conference kicked off with the trio being introduced by the moderator, who acknowledged the momentous occasion. “Friday is going to mark the 100th round of competition at Lake Falls,” the moderator stated. "Just let that sink in for a minute."
      Bubba Watson: “Exciting Times”
Watson, captain of the Range Goats GC, shared his thoughts first, expressing his enthusiasm about being part of a transformative period in golf history. “When I think about going through the motions of deciding when to come to LIV, I thought about the 10-year plan on paper, what the goals were. And it's met my expectations. It's been better than that. We've changed the face of golf. To be on that side of history is pretty special.”
He drew parallels between the current changes in golf and those that took place during the era of legends like Arnold Palmer, emphasizing the significance of LIV Golf's impact on the sport. “Scottie's [Scheffler] made a lot of money this year because of the changes we've started putting in place, and I believe that golf is actually growing in the right spot.”
Patrick Reed: “Too Many Rounds, No Wins”
Patrick Reed, who captains 4Aces GC, offered a more introspective reflection, focusing on the challenges and opportunities presented by the new league. “When you reflect back on these last couple of years and 100 rounds, what comes to mind? Too many rounds, no wins,” Reed joked. He highlighted the rapid success of LIV Golf, remarking on how quickly the league has grown and evolved, making golf faster and more entertaining.
“We stepped into a world that was all about tradition only and have changed the face of golf for the better,” Reed said. “Golf was slow, boring, long. And we've now brought in the fast and more entertaining part of life.”
      Bryson DeChambeau: “A Five-Year Vision”
Bryson DeChambeau, captain of Crushers GC, echoed Reed’s sentiments about the league's growth but focused on the future. “I didn’t know where we would exactly be at 100 rounds, but I can tell you that the progress has been amazingly awesome,” DeChambeau said. He expressed confidence in the league’s trajectory, emphasizing the potential for LIV Golf to revolutionize the sport further.
DeChambeau also reflected on his own experiences at The Greenbrier, noting that the resort holds a special place in his heart, especially after shooting a historic 58 during a previous tournament. “That was the day that my life had changed for the better for sure,” DeChambeau recalled. “And coming here last year, I had this new piece of equipment, the driver in play, that I felt like I was gonna be able to get lost later. Ultimately, that was a massive difference for me in order to be more comfortable on the golf course this year.”
The Greenbrier: A Special Place for Families and Golfers Alike
When asked about what makes The Greenbrier so special, Watson and Reed were quick to praise the atmosphere and community. “This is a community. This property runs this community,” Watson said. “A lot of people from this community work here. They're proud of this. This has got a lot of history here.”
Reed added, “One thing about this place is it’s a place that, when at least when my family comes, they treat you like family. They treat you like you're one of their own.”
DeChambeau, who also has a deep connection to the Greenbrier, described how the environment of the resort makes him feel at home and allows him to perform at his best. “It's a really cool feeling for me to come back every single time I've been here,” he said. “Whether it was previous to LIV or now, and so just feel incredibly comfortable.”
Looking Ahead: The Future of LIV Golf
As the press conference wrapped up, the conversation shifted to the future of LIV Golf. DeChambeau teased upcoming challenges and content that would bring even more excitement to the league, including the possibility of breaking his own record of 58. He also hinted at plans to expand his reach to younger audiences through new media ventures.
The press conference concluded with a photo session and a few light-hearted moments, as the players expressed their eagerness for the upcoming rounds at The Greenbrier and their commitment to pushing the boundaries of professional golf.
As LIV Golf celebrates its 100th round, the league’s stars continue to drive the sport forward, blending tradition with innovation at every turn. The Greenbrier, with its rich history and welcoming atmosphere, remains a fitting venue for such a milestone, embodying both the past and the future of golf.
